1. Simple Present Tense
Structure: Subject + V₁ / V₁ + s/es
A. Habits and repeated actions
I wake up at six every morning.
She walks to school daily.
We visit our grandparents on Sundays.

B. General truths
The earth moves around the sun.

C. Permanent situations
She lives in Kozhikode.
He works in a government office.
My uncle owns a small shop.
They speak Malayalam at home.
The school stands near the river.
D. Timetables and fixed schedules
The train leaves at 6 p.m.
The examination begins at 9.30 a.m.
The bank opens at ten.
Our flight arrives tomorrow morning.
The academic year ends in March.

2. Present Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + am/is/are + V-ing
A. Actions happening now
She is reading a novel.
I am writing a letter.
They are playing outside.
The teacher is explaining the lesson.
The baby is sleeping.
B. Temporary situations
He is staying with his uncle this week.
I am working in Karaikal for a few months.
She is using her mother’s phone today.
They are living in a rented house temporarily.
We are attending a short training programme.
C. Changing or developing situations
The climate is becoming warmer.
The population is increasing rapidly.
Your English is improving.
Technology is changing our lives.
The river is getting polluted.
D. Planned future arrangements
We are meeting the principal tomorrow.
She is travelling to Chennai next week.
They are holding a meeting this evening.
I am visiting my doctor on Monday.
He is joining the new office next month.
E. Repeated irritating actions with “always”
He is always losing his keys.
She is always interrupting me.
They are always making unnecessary noise.
You are always arriving late.
My brother is always borrowing my books.
3. Present Perfect Tense
Structure: Subject + has/have + V₃
A. Recently completed actions
She has just finished her work.
I have just eaten breakfast.
They have recently moved to a new house.
The train has just arrived.
He has recently completed his training.
B. Past actions with a present result
I have lost my key.
She has broken her glasses.
It has rained heavily.
He has injured his leg.
They have cancelled the meeting.
C. Experiences without mentioning a definite time
I have visited Delhi.
She has travelled by air.
They have seen the Taj Mahal.
He has never eaten sushi.

D. Actions during an unfinished period
I have attended two meetings today.

E. Actions beginning in the past and continuing now

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + has/have been + V-ing
A. Actions beginning in the past and continuing now
She has been studying for two hours.
I have been waiting since morning.
They have been living here since 2015.
He has been working in this office for six years.
We have been learning English since June.
B. Recently stopped actions with visible results
The ground is wet because it has been raining.
She is tired because she has been working hard.
His clothes are dirty because he has been gardening.
Her eyes are red because she has been crying.
The kitchen smells good because Mother has been cooking.
C. Emphasising the duration of an action
I have been reading for three hours.
She has been teaching here for twenty years.
They have been discussing the issue all day.
He has been preparing for the examination for six months.
We have been travelling since early morning.
5. Simple Past Tense
Structure: Subject + V₂
A. Completed actions in the past
She visited Chennai yesterday.
I completed the report last night.
They won the match.
He bought a new bicycle.
We attended the meeting on Monday.
B. A series of completed past actions
He entered the room, opened the window and sat down.
She woke up, brushed her teeth and prepared breakfast.
I reached the office, checked the files and called the clerk.
They packed their bags, locked the house and left.
The teacher entered the class, greeted the students and began the lesson.
C. Past habits
We played outside every evening.
She walked to school when she was young.
My grandfather read the newspaper every morning.
He visited us every Sunday.
They often went swimming in the river.
D. Past situations or facts
He lived in Mumbai when he was young.
She worked as a teacher for thirty years.
The building once belonged to a merchant.
India was under British rule.
The village had only one school at that time.
6. Past Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + was/were + V-ing
A. Actions in progress at a particular past time
She was studying at 8 p.m.
I was travelling at midnight.
They were playing football yesterday evening.
He was attending a meeting at ten.
We were sleeping at that time.
B. An action interrupted by another action
I was sleeping when the phone rang.
She was cooking when the guests arrived.
They were playing when it started to rain.
He was driving when the accident occurred.
We were discussing the matter when the officer entered.
C. Two simultaneous past actions
While she was cooking, he was cleaning the room.
I was reading while my brother was watching television.
The students were writing while the teacher was observing them.
They were singing while we were dancing.
Mother was preparing dinner while Father was watering the plants.
D. Background descriptions in stories
The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
The wind was blowing gently.
People were hurrying along the busy street.

7. Past Perfect Tense
Structure: Subject + had + V₃
A. An action completed before another past action
The train had left before we reached the station.
She had finished dinner when I arrived.
They had closed the shop before the rain started.
He had completed the work before the officer came.
The patient had died before the doctor arrived.
B. An action completed before a particular past time
She had finished the work by 5 p.m.
We had reached home by midnight.
He had submitted the application by Friday.
They had completed the bridge by the end of the year.
I had read the book before the examination.
C. Explaining the reason for a past situation
He was tired because he had not slept well.
She was hungry because she had skipped breakfast.
The road was flooded because it had rained heavily.
They were happy because they had won the competition.

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + had been + V-ing
A. Actions continuing up to another point in the past
She had been waiting for an hour before the bus arrived.
I had been studying before the lights went out.
They had been working there before the factory closed.
He had been driving for five hours when the car broke down.
We had been talking for some time when the teacher entered.
B. Emphasising the duration of a past action
They had been working there for ten years.

9. Simple Future Tense
Structure: Subject + will + V₁
A. Predictions
It will rain tomorrow.

The population will continue to increase.
She will become a good teacher.
B. Decisions made at the moment of speaking
I will answer the phone.
I will carry your bag.
We will take a taxi.
I will open the window.
I will speak to the officer now.
C. Promises and offers
I will help you.
We will support your project.
I will never forget your kindness.
She will bring you some water.
They will complete the work on time.
D. Future facts
She will be twenty next year.
Tomorrow will be Monday.
The new term will begin in June.
The office will remain closed on Sunday.
The ceremony will take place next month.
10. Future Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + will be + V-ing
A. Actions in progress at a particular future time
This time tomorrow, we will be travelling.
She will be writing the examination at 10 a.m.
I will be attending a meeting in the afternoon.
They will be sleeping when we arrive.
He will be working at this time next week.
B. Expected future activities
She will be working in her office tomorrow.
The students will be preparing for their examination.
They will be staying with us during the holidays.
He will be travelling frequently in his new job.
We will be discussing the proposal next week.
C. Polite questions about someone’s plans
Will you be attending the meeting?
Will you be using the computer this evening?
Will she be joining us for dinner?
Will they be staying here tonight?
Will you be travelling to Chennai tomorrow?
11. Future Perfect Tense
Structure: Subject + will have + V₃
A. Actions completed before a future time
She will have finished the work by evening.
I will have completed the course by June.
They will have constructed the bridge by next year.
He will have reached home by midnight.
We will have submitted the report by Friday.
B. Actions completed before another future action
They will have left before we arrive.
She will have cooked dinner before the guests come.
I will have completed the work before the officer returns.
The students will have entered the hall before the examination begins.
He will have retired before the new rules come into effect.
12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + will have been + V-ing
A. Actions continuing up to a particular future time
By next month, she will have been working here for five years.
By noon, I will have been travelling for six hours.
By December, they will have been living here for ten years.
By next week, he will have been receiving treatment for a month.
By March, we will have been preparing for the examination for six months.
B. Emphasising the duration of a future action
At noon, he will have been studying for three hours.
By evening, she will have been waiting for five hours.
Next year, I will have been teaching for twenty years.
By midnight, they will have been working for twelve hours.
By June, we will have been running this programme for five years.
