The Hour of Truth – Percival Wilde

The Hour of Truth is a one-act play written by Percival Wilde, an American playwright and writer of detective stories. The play is a powerful study of honesty, moral courage and the influence of money on human beings. Through the life of Robert Baldwin, the playwright shows that a person’s conscience and integrity are more valuable than wealth and comfort. The play proves that truth may face difficulties, but it will finally be respected and rewarded.

The play takes place at Robert Baldwin’s cottage on a dark Sunday afternoon. Robert Baldwin has gone outside, and his wife Martha and children John and Evie are waiting for him. They are worried about the bank scandal involving John Gresham, the owner of the bank where Robert worked. Gresham has been arrested for financial wrongdoing, and Robert Baldwin is expected to give evidence against him in court because he is the main witness in the case.

While waiting for Robert, the family discusses John Gresham and the bank collapse. Evie wonders why Gresham wanted to meet her father before the trial. She suspects that Robert might have known about Gresham’s activities because newspapers have raised doubts about him. Martha strongly supports her husband and says that Robert is an honest man who would never do anything wrong. She believes that he discovered Gresham’s crime accidentally and always acted according to his principles.

John explains that the bank employees knew nothing about the problem until the sudden collapse of the bank. He says that Robert was the person closest to Gresham and therefore the only important witness against him. However, Martha believes that Robert will always do his duty and speak the truth, whatever the consequences may be.

When Robert Baldwin returns home, the family eagerly asks him about what happened. Baldwin explains that he discovered Gresham’s illegal activities only one day before the bank collapsed. He confronted Gresham and forced him to close the bank. Although Gresham was angry, Baldwin stood firm because he knew that protecting people’s money was more important than protecting Gresham’s reputation.

Baldwin then reveals the reason why Gresham called him. Gresham wanted Baldwin to help him escape punishment during the court trial. He requested Baldwin to say “I don’t remember” when questioned about the important details of the case. Although these words may seem simple, Baldwin knows that saying them would be dishonest because he clearly remembers everything.

Baldwin reveals that Gresham offered him one hundred thousand dollars for keeping silent. However, Baldwin refuses the offer because he believes that accepting the money would destroy his honour and self-respect. He says that he wants to live the rest of his life with a clear conscience. For Baldwin, honesty is more valuable than money.

At first, Baldwin’s family appreciates his honesty. But when they hear about the huge amount of money offered by Gresham, their attitude begins to change. They start thinking about their financial difficulties and try to convince Baldwin to accept the money. They argue that nobody will lose money and that Gresham may repay the depositors. They also remind Baldwin about his long friendship with Gresham and the benefits that the money could bring to the family.

Baldwin is shocked and disappointed when his own family supports dishonesty. He feels that money has changed their values. He realises that even good people can be tempted when they see the possibility of wealth and comfort. In his emotional reaction, he calls them “Shams! Liars! Hypocrites! Thieves!” because they are ready to ignore truth for personal gain.

However, Baldwin remains firm in his decision. He refuses to accept Gresham’s money because he believes that a dishonest act would destroy his entire life’s reputation. He understands that a person may lose money, but losing honesty and self-respect is a much greater loss.

At this important moment, Mr. Marshall, the President of the Third National Bank, arrives at Baldwin’s house. He informs Baldwin that a respectable position is waiting for him at his bank. He also reveals that Gresham confessed his crime because he understood that Baldwin could never be influenced by money. Mr. Marshall praises Baldwin’s honesty and tells his family that everyone will respect him for his moral courage.

The play ends with the victory of truth and honesty. Robert Baldwin proves that real success does not come from money or power but from strong character and a clear conscience. The Hour of Truth teaches us that even in difficult situations, a person should remain truthful and faithful to moral values. The play gives a powerful message that honesty may be tested, but it will always earn respect and honour in the end.
