Parts of Speech
Every English sentence is made up of different kinds of words. These words are grouped into Parts of Speech according to the role they perform in a sentence. Understanding these word groups is the first step towards learning English grammar correctly.
1.1 Noun
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, animal, or idea.
What do nouns name?
People: doctor, student, teacher
Places: school, village, Kerala
Things: table, pencil, computer
Animals: tiger, horse, sparrow
Ideas or Feelings: honesty, kindness, freedom
Examples
The teacher explained the lesson.
Kochi is a busy city.
She bought a notebook.
Honesty earns respect.
1.2 Pronoun
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.
Why do we use pronouns?
Pronouns help us avoid repeating the same noun again and again, making sentences smoother and easier to read.
Common Pronouns
I, we, you, he, she, it, they

my, your, his, her, their
Examples
Ravi is my classmate. He is very helpful.
Meera enjoys reading. She visits the library often.
The children are playing. They look happy.
This is my bag. It is new.
1.3 Verb
A verb is a word that expresses an action, a state, or possession.
Functions of Verbs
Action: run, dance, read, write
State: is, am, are, was, were
Possession: have, has, had
Examples
She writes beautifully.
They play cricket every evening.
He is a doctor.
I have a bicycle.
1.4 Adjective
An adjective is a word that gives more information about a noun or pronoun.
Adjectives describe
Quality: brave, honest, intelligent
Colour: blue, yellow, black
Size: large, tiny, tall
Number: one, several, many
Examples
She is an intelligent student.
I saw a yellow butterfly.
They live in a large house.
There are three chairs in the room.
1.5 Adverb
An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
Adverbs tell us
How: slowly, carefully, happily
When: today, tomorrow, yesterday
Where: inside, outside, nearby
To what extent: very, quite, almost
Examples
She sang beautifully.
He arrived yesterday.
The children are playing outside.
The question is very easy.
1.6 Preposition
A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in the sentence.
Prepositions indicate
Place: on, under, beside, behind
Time: before, after, during
Direction: into, towards, from, to
Examples
The book is on the desk.
The cat is under the table.
We reached school before nine.
She walked towards the station.
1.7 Conjunction
A conjunction is a joining word that connects words, phrases or clauses.
Common Conjunctions
and, but, or, because, so, although, if
Examples
Amal and Arun are classmates.
She is poor but honest.
Would you like tea or coffee?
He stayed at home because he was unwell.
1.8 Interjection
An interjection is a word or short expression used to show sudden emotions or feelings.
