A THREE-WHEELED REVOLUTION

 Introduction

A Three-Wheeled Revolution is an inspiring interview with Irfan Alam, a young social entrepreneur who transformed the lives of thousands of cycle rickshaw pullers in India. The interview was conducted by Sujatha Ramprasad after Irfan participated in the Entrepreneurship Summit in Washington, D.C. in 2010.

The interview highlights how a simple idea, supported by determination and compassion, can bring about a meaningful social change. Irfan's journey teaches us that entrepreneurship is not merely about making profits but also about solving social problems and empowering disadvantaged people.

Irfan's Early Business Instinct

Irfan Alam says that entrepreneurship has always been a part of his personality. His interest in business began at a very young age. As a schoolboy, he used to travel by cycle rickshaw. One day, while buying vegetables from the market, he realized that the rickshaw puller earned nothing while waiting for passengers. This made him think of ways to utilize the waiting time productively.

He bought some vegetables and asked the rickshaw puller to sell them while waiting for passengers. Surprisingly, on the very first day, the rickshaw puller made a profit of eight rupees. This small incident convinced Irfan that even simple ideas could improve the income of poor workers. It also revealed his ability to identify problems and find practical solutions.

Interest in the Stock Market

Another turning point came during the 1992 stock market scam. Irfan's father and many of his friends lost a considerable amount of money. Instead of ignoring the situation, young Irfan began studying the stock market and researching various companies.

Using his knowledge, he advised his father and his friends about better investments. They gradually recovered their losses and even started making profits. Encouraged by this success, Irfan started his own portfolio management firm at the age of thirteen.

Although his parents appreciated his talent, they were worried that his growing interest in business might affect his studies. They advised him to concentrate on his education. Respecting their wishes, Irfan temporarily gave up his business activities but continued to study the rickshaw sector while pursuing his Master's Degree in Foreign Trade at Pondicherry.

The Business Baazigar Competition

In 2006, Irfan's dream received a fresh opportunity. A television reality show called Business Baazigar invited young entrepreneurs to submit innovative business ideas.

Irfan proposed a revolutionary business model to organize the unorganized rickshaw sector. According to his proposal:

  • Rickshaws could carry advertisements for different companies.
  • The unused spaces on the vehicles could be sold for brand promotion.
  • Rickshaw pullers could sell drinking water, fruit juice, biscuits, newspapers, and mobile recharge cards to passengers.
  • This would create additional sources of income without increasing the fare.

The judges appreciated his innovative idea, and he won the competition. He was offered seed money of Rupees 150 lakhs to start the project.

Why Irfan Refused the Prize Money

Although winning such a large amount was a great achievement, Irfan made a surprising decision. He refused to accept the prize money.

He realized that merely making profits would not ensure the long-term success of the project. The real challenge was to earn the trust and loyalty of the rickshaw pullers. He wanted to establish an organization that would provide them with insurance, identity cards, uniforms, and dignity.

His plan was to run the organization as a not-for-profit social venture, but the organizers of the television show did not agree with this model. As a result, Irfan rejected the seed capital despite its enormous value.

This decision shows that he valued his principles more than financial gain.

Birth of SammaaN Foundation

As Irfan spent more time with rickshaw pullers, he understood their difficult lives. Most of them did not own their vehicles. Instead, they rented rickshaws every day by paying 30 to 40 rupees as rent. Whatever little money remained after paying the rent was barely enough to support their families.

He realized that these hardworking people remained trapped in poverty despite working throughout the day.

Inspired by the economic theory of Professor C. K. Prahalad, who believed that businesses could succeed by serving the people at the bottom of the pyramid, Irfan decided to establish SammaaN Foundation in 2007.

The initial investment came not from television prize money but from his own family members and friends.

How SammaaN Works

Whenever a rickshaw puller joins SammaaN, the organization first verifies his identity. The members then receive training in traffic rules, road safety, and good behaviour towards passengers.

One of SammaaN's greatest achievements is helping rickshaw pullers obtain bank loans to purchase their own rickshaws. Earlier, banks were unwilling to lend money to them because they lacked financial security. SammaaN acts as a guarantor, making it easier for them to obtain loans.

Instead of paying daily rent to vehicle owners throughout their lives, the pullers now pay monthly instalments to the bank. Eventually, they become the owners of their own rickshaws.

Each member also receives:

  • Accident insurance
  • Health insurance
  • Identity card
  • Uniform
  • Professional recognition
  • A sense of belonging to the SammaaN family

These facilities improve not only their financial condition but also their dignity and self-confidence.

Increasing the Income of Rickshaw Pullers

SammaaN developed several innovative ways to increase the earnings of rickshaw pullers.

The rickshaws were redesigned to provide space for advertisements. Well-known local and national companies displayed their advertisements on these vehicles. The advertisement income was shared equally between SammaaN and the rickshaw pullers.

In addition, the pullers sold items such as:

  • Bottled water
  • Fruit juice
  • Newspapers
  • Mobile recharge cards

They collected these products every morning from a central warehouse and sold them during the day. The profits from these sales were also shared with SammaaN.

However, the income earned from transporting passengers belonged entirely to the rickshaw pullers.

As a result of these innovations, the average income of the operators increased by 30 to 40 percent.

Beyond Financial Benefits

Irfan believes that true empowerment is not measured only in terms of money.

The members of SammaaN enjoy many social benefits. They receive respect from society because of their professional identity cards and uniforms. Their children and spouses attend free evening educational programmes called SammaaN Gyaan, where they receive basic education.

The organization has restored dignity to a group of workers who were once considered insignificant. The members now feel proud of their profession and experience a sense of belonging.

SammaaN itself also became financially successful. During one financial year, it earned a revenue of fifty lakh rupees and a net profit of eight lakh rupees, proving that social service and business sustainability can go together.

A Vision for the Future

Some people believe that cycle rickshaws are disappearing because of modern transportation. Irfan strongly disagrees.

He points out that the number of rickshaws has actually increased in cities like New Delhi, especially after the introduction of metro rail services. Rickshaws have become the preferred means of transport for passengers travelling to and from metro stations.

He also believes that cycle rickshaws are environmentally friendly because they do not cause pollution.

To make them even more efficient, SammaaN has established a Research and Development (R&D) Wing that is working on designing solar-powered fibreglass rickshaws.

International Recognition

Irfan's remarkable work attracted worldwide attention.

At the Presidential Entrepreneurship Summit in Washington, D.C., he met several world leaders and entrepreneurs. He had the opportunity to interact with Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, who appreciated his work and invited him to Bangladesh to establish a similar organization for rickshaw workers there.

Even President Barack Obama praised Irfan's efforts and admired his contribution towards improving the lives of poor workers.

Advice to Young People

At the end of the interview, Irfan encourages students to think differently.

According to him, an entrepreneur is someone who recognizes an opportunity and works hard to convert it into a successful enterprise. Although many young people are discouraged from choosing entrepreneurship as a career, he believes that entrepreneurship can become one of the most effective solutions to unemployment.

He advises students to dream boldly but also to take carefully calculated risks. Success comes to those who combine vision, determination, innovation, and social responsibility.

Conclusion

A Three-Wheeled Revolution is much more than the story of a successful businessman. It is the inspiring journey of a young visionary who used entrepreneurship as a tool for social transformation. Instead of focusing only on profits, Irfan Alam dedicated his efforts to improving the lives of poor rickshaw pullers by providing them with financial security, dignity, education, and hope.

The lesson teaches us that real success lies in creating opportunities for others. It reminds us that even a simple idea, when guided by compassion and perseverance, can transform thousands of lives. Irfan Alam's journey proves that social entrepreneurship has the power to reduce poverty, generate employment, and build a more inclusive and compassionate society.
