5. Articles and Determiners

 


Articles and determiners are words placed before nouns to make their meaning clear. They help us identify which person or thing we are talking about, indicate ownership, and show quantity or number.


5.1 Articles

Articles are a special type of determiner. English has three articles:

a, an, the


5.1.1 Indefinite Articles – a and an

The articles a and an are used when referring to a person or thing in a general or non-specific way.

Use a

Use a before words that begin with a consonant sound.

Examples

  • a book

  • a student

  • a bicycle

  • a doctor

Use an

Use an before words that begin with a vowel sound.

Examples

  • an apple

  • an elephant

  • an engineer

  • an hour (the 'h' is silent)

Example Sentences

  • I saw a cat on the road.

  • She is an engineer.

  • He bought a notebook.


5.1.2 Definite Article – the

The article the is used when the noun refers to something specific or already known to the speaker and listener.

Use the

  • Before something already mentioned.

  • Before unique things.

  • Before superlative adjectives.

Examples

  • The book on the table belongs to me.

  • The moon looks beautiful tonight.

  • She is the tallest girl in the class.


5.2 Determiners

Determiners are words placed before nouns to specify or limit their meaning.


1. Demonstrative Determiners

These determiners point out a particular person or thing.

Words: this, that, these, those

Examples

  • This pen is mine.

  • Those flowers are beautiful.


2. Possessive Determiners

These show ownership or possession.

Words: my, your, his, her, its, our, their

Examples

  • This is my notebook.

  • Their house is very large.


3. Quantifying Determiners

These indicate quantity or amount.

Words: some, many, much, few, little, several

Examples

  • I have some books.

  • Many students attended the seminar.


4. Numeral Determiners

These express number or position.

Words: one, two, first, second

Examples

  • She has two brothers.

  • He secured first place in the competition.


5. Distributive Determiners

These refer to members of a group individually.

Words: each, every, either, neither

Examples

  • Each student received a certificate.

  • Every child deserves good education.


5.3 Common Mistakes

Incorrect

❌ He is a honest man.

Correct

✔ He is an honest man.


Incorrect

❌ She is an university student.

Correct

✔ She is a university student.

("University" begins with the consonant sound /yu/.)


Incorrect

❌ I saw a elephant.

Correct

✔ I saw an elephant.
