Structure: Subject + V₂
A. Completed actions in the past
She visited Chennai yesterday.
I completed the report last night.
They won the match.
He bought a new bicycle.
We attended the meeting on Monday.
B. A series of completed past actions
He entered the room, opened the window and sat down.
She woke up, brushed her teeth and prepared breakfast.
I reached the office, checked the files and called the clerk.
They packed their bags, locked the house and left.
The teacher entered the class, greeted the students and began the lesson.
C. Past habits
We played outside every evening.
She walked to school when she was young.
My grandfather read the newspaper every morning.
He visited us every Sunday.
They often went swimming in the river.
D. Past situations or facts
He lived in Mumbai when he was young.
She worked as a teacher for thirty years.
The building once belonged to a merchant.
India was under British rule.
The village had only one school at that time.

6. Past Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + was/were + V-ing
A. Actions in progress at a particular past time
She was studying at 8 p.m.
I was travelling at midnight.
They were playing football yesterday evening.
He was attending a meeting at ten.
We were sleeping at that time.
B. An action interrupted by another action
I was sleeping when the phone rang.
She was cooking when the guests arrived.
They were playing when it started to rain.
He was driving when the accident occurred.
We were discussing the matter when the officer entered.
C. Two simultaneous past actions
While she was cooking, he was cleaning the room.
I was reading while my brother was watching television.
The students were writing while the teacher was observing them.
They were singing while we were dancing.
Mother was preparing dinner while Father was watering the plants.
D. Background descriptions in stories
The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
The wind was blowing gently.
People were hurrying along the busy street.
Children were playing while the rain was falling.
The moon was glowing above the silent village.

7. Past Perfect Tense
Structure: Subject + had + V₃
A. An action completed before another past action
The train had left before we reached the station.
She had finished dinner when I arrived.
They had closed the shop before the rain started.
He had completed the work before the officer came.
The patient had died before the doctor arrived.
B. An action completed before a particular past time
She had finished the work by 5 p.m.
We had reached home by midnight.
He had submitted the application by Friday.
They had completed the bridge by the end of the year.
I had read the book before the examination.
C. Explaining the reason for a past situation
He was tired because he had not slept well.
She was hungry because she had skipped breakfast.
The road was flooded because it had rained heavily.
They were happy because they had won the competition.
I was nervous because I had not prepared properly.

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Structure: Subject + had been + V-ing
A. Actions continuing up to another point in the past
She had been waiting for an hour before the bus arrived.
I had been studying before the lights went out.
They had been working there before the factory closed.
He had been driving for five hours when the car broke down.
We had been talking for some time when the teacher entered.
B. Emphasising the duration of a past action
They had been working there for ten years.
She had been teaching for twenty years before she retired.
I had been preparing for the examination for six months.
He had been living alone for several years.
We had been travelling for twelve hours.
C. Showing the cause of a past result
The road was wet because it had been raining.
She was tired because she had been working all day.
His hands were dirty because he had been repairing the car.
They were exhausted because they had been running.
The children were excited because they had been preparing for the festival.]
