PAST TENSE—USES AND EXAMPLES

🟠 5. Simple Past Tense

Structure: Subject + V₂

A. Completed actions in the past

🔴 1. She visited Chennai yesterday.

🔵 2. I completed the report last night.

🟢 3. They won the match.

🟣 4. He bought a new bicycle.

🟠 5. We attended the meeting on Monday.

B. A series of completed past actions

🔴 1. He entered the room, opened the window and sat down.

🔵 2. She woke up, brushed her teeth and prepared breakfast.

🟢 3. I reached the office, checked the files and called the clerk.

🟣 4. They packed their bags, locked the house and left.

🟠 5. The teacher entered the class, greeted the students and began the lesson.

C. Past habits

🔴 1. We played outside every evening.

🔵 2. She walked to school when she was young.

🟢 3. My grandfather read the newspaper every morning.

🟣 4. He visited us every Sunday.

🟠 5. They often went swimming in the river.

D. Past situations or facts

🔴 1. He lived in Mumbai when he was young.

🔵 2. She worked as a teacher for thirty years.

🟢 3. The building once belonged to a merchant.

🟣 4. India was under British rule.

🟠 5. The village had only one school at that time.

🔵 6. Past Continuous Tense

Structure: Subject + was/were + V-ing

A. Actions in progress at a particular past time

🔴 1. She was studying at 8 p.m.

🔵 2. I was travelling at midnight.

🟢 3. They were playing football yesterday evening.

🟣 4. He was attending a meeting at ten.

🟠 5. We were sleeping at that time.

B. An action interrupted by another action

🔴 1. I was sleeping when the phone rang.

🔵 2. She was cooking when the guests arrived.

🟢 3. They were playing when it started to rain.

🟣 4. He was driving when the accident occurred.

🟠 5. We were discussing the matter when the officer entered.

C. Two simultaneous past actions

🔴 1. While she was cooking, he was cleaning the room.

🔵 2. I was reading while my brother was watching television.

🟢 3. The students were writing while the teacher was observing them.

🟣 4. They were singing while we were dancing.

🟠 5. Mother was preparing dinner while Father was watering the plants.

D. Background descriptions in stories

🔴 1. The sun was shining and the birds were singing.

🔵 2. The wind was blowing gently.

🟢 3. People were hurrying along the busy street.

🟣 4. Children were playing while the rain was falling.

🟠 5. The moon was glowing above the silent village.

🟣 7. Past Perfect Tense

Structure: Subject + had + V₃

A. An action completed before another past action

🔴 1. The train had left before we reached the station.

🔵 2. She had finished dinner when I arrived.

🟢 3. They had closed the shop before the rain started.

🟣 4. He had completed the work before the officer came.

🟠 5. The patient had died before the doctor arrived.

B. An action completed before a particular past time

🔴 1. She had finished the work by 5 p.m.

🔵 2. We had reached home by midnight.

🟢 3. He had submitted the application by Friday.

🟣 4. They had completed the bridge by the end of the year.

🟠 5. I had read the book before the examination.

C. Explaining the reason for a past situation

🔴 1. He was tired because he had not slept well.

🔵 2. She was hungry because she had skipped breakfast.

🟢 3. The road was flooded because it had rained heavily.

🟣 4. They were happy because they had won the competition.

🟠 5. I was nervous because I had not prepared properly.

🟢 8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Structure: Subject + had been + V-ing

A. Actions continuing up to another point in the past

🔴 1. She had been waiting for an hour before the bus arrived.

🔵 2. I had been studying before the lights went out.

🟢 3. They had been working there before the factory closed.

🟣 4. He had been driving for five hours when the car broke down.

🟠 5. We had been talking for some time when the teacher entered.

B. Emphasising the duration of a past action

🔴 1. They had been working there for ten years.

🔵 2. She had been teaching for twenty years before she retired.

🟢 3. I had been preparing for the examination for six months.

🟣 4. He had been living alone for several years.

🟠 5. We had been travelling for twelve hours.

C. Showing the cause of a past result

🔴 1. The road was wet because it had been raining.

🔵 2. She was tired because she had been working all day.

🟢 3. His hands were dirty because he had been repairing the car.

🟣 4. They were exhausted because they had been running.

🟠 5. The children were excited because they had been preparing for the festival.
