A Draught of Kindness – Detailed Story in Simple Language
A Draught of Kindness is an extract from Charles Dickens' famous novel The Old Curiosity Shop. The story tells about Little Nell and her grandfather, who are travelling through the English countryside after leaving London. It is a beautiful story that shows how kindness and compassion can bring comfort to people in difficult situations.
Little Nell and her grandfather are forced to leave London because they are in debt and are being troubled by cruel moneylenders. They have no fixed destination and do not know what the future holds for them. However, they continue their journey, hoping to find safety and peace.
As they travel through the countryside, they see beautiful villages, green fields, farms, ponds, churches, and cottages. The scenery is peaceful and pleasant, but the travellers are tired and worried. They spend one night at a small inn and continue their journey the next morning.
After walking for many hours, Nell and her grandfather become hungry and exhausted. They need some food and a place to rest. Nell decides to ask for some milk at a nearby cottage. She is shy and afraid that the people may refuse her request. After looking at several cottages, she chooses one where an old man is sitting outside. She feels that he may be kind and understanding.
Nell politely asks whether they can have some milk and rest for a while. The family welcomes them warmly. One of the boys quickly brings milk, while another brings stools for them to sit on. The family treats the travellers with kindness and respect.
The old cottager begins to talk to Nell and her grandfather. He asks them where they have come from and learns that they are from London. He then shares stories about his own life. He tells them how he used to travel to London in his younger days. He also speaks sadly about his son, who joined the army and later died. His conversation is friendly and comforting.
While resting in the cottage, Nell notices how simple but neat and clean everything is. The cottage does not contain expensive furniture, but it is full of warmth and happiness. Nell feels peaceful and comfortable there.
After some time, Nell asks how far it is to the nearest town. The old cottager tells her that it is about five miles away. He suggests that they stay nearby for the night because they look tired. However, Nell's grandfather becomes anxious and insists on continuing the journey. He wants to move farther away from London and its troubles.
As they prepare to leave, the cottager's wife notices that Nell is walking with difficulty. She sees that the girl's foot is blistered and sore from the long journey. Being a kind and caring woman, she gently washes the wound and applies a remedy. She refuses to let Nell leave until she feels better. Nell is deeply touched by this motherly care and gratefully thanks her.
Soon it is time to leave. The entire family comes outside to say goodbye. They wave their hands and wish the travellers well. Their affection and concern make the farewell very emotional.
Nell and her grandfather continue walking along the road. They are still tired, but they feel encouraged by the kindness they have received. After some distance, they hear the sound of a cart approaching. The driver stops and asks whether they had rested at a nearby cottage. When Nell says yes, he explains that the cottagers had asked him to look out for them.
The kind driver offers them a ride in his empty cart. Nell and her grandfather gladly accept the offer. To them, the simple cart feels as comfortable as a luxurious carriage. Nell lies down on the straw in the cart and soon falls asleep because she is so tired.
After travelling some distance, the cart driver reaches the point where he must take a different road. Before leaving, he shows them the way to the nearest town and wishes them good luck. Nell and her grandfather thank him sincerely for his help.
The story ends with the travellers continuing their journey. Although they still face uncertainty, the kindness shown by the cottager's family and the cart driver gives them hope and strength. The lesson teaches us that even small acts of kindness can make a great difference in the lives of people who are suffering.
