Quest for a Theory of Everything – Summary

“Quest for a Theory of Everything” is a biographical profile of the renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, written by Kitty Gail Ferguson. It presents Hawking’s search for a complete theory of the universe and his extraordinary victory over severe physical disability.

The profile begins with Hawking’s inaugural lecture as the new Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University on 29 April 1980. His lecture was titled “Is the End in Sight for Theoretical Physics?” He surprised the audience by suggesting that scientists might soon discover a single theory capable of explaining the universe and everything that happens in it. Though Hawking sat silently in a wheelchair while a student read his lecture, his brilliant mind took the audience on an exciting journey through time and space.

Stephen William Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, exactly three hundred years after the death of Galileo. His parents, Frank and Isobel Hawking, were not wealthy, but they valued education. Stephen attended Saint Alban’s School after missing the scholarship examination for Westminster because of illness.

From childhood, Hawking wanted to understand the fundamental truths of nature. His father wanted him to study medicine, but Stephen disliked biology because he considered it imprecise. He preferred mathematics and physics, which offered the possibility of exact answers. He was not a child prodigy and did not rank at the top of his class. However, by the age of fourteen, he had decided to pursue mathematics and physics.

At seventeen, Hawking joined University College, Oxford, to study natural science and specialise in physics. Initially, he felt lonely and bored, but he later became popular among his fellow students. They remembered him as lively, cheerful, adaptable and witty. He enjoyed classical music, science fiction and sports.

Hawking wished to pursue doctoral research at Cambridge. His admission depended on obtaining a First from Oxford. His examination result placed him on the borderline between a first and a second. During the interview, he cleverly told the examiners that if he received a First, he would go to Cambridge, but if he received a Second, he would remain at Oxford. Impressed by his intelligence and wit, they awarded him a First.

Life at Cambridge was initially difficult because of his inadequate mathematical background. More seriously, Hawking began to experience clumsiness, unexplained falls, difficulty tying his shoes and problems with speech. Shortly after his twenty-first birthday in 1963, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an incurable disease that gradually destroys the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Doctors informed him that he might have only two years to live.

The diagnosis drove Hawking into deep depression. However, dreams about approaching death made him realise that life still contained many worthwhile things. When the progression of the disease slowed, he began to enjoy the present more than before and understood how precious life was.

A significant change occurred when Hawking met Jane Wilde. Jane was serious-minded, optimistic and deeply religious. She believed that good could emerge from adversity. Her friendship and encouragement restored Hawking’s will to live. They realised that they could build a worthwhile life together. Hawking received a research fellowship at Caius College in 1965, and he and Jane were married in the same year.

Despite his increasing disability, Hawking established himself as an exceptional scientist. He moved around with a cane and had difficulty speaking, but he boldly asked unexpected and penetrating questions during discussions with distinguished scientists. His brilliance earned him a reputation as a genius comparable to Einstein.

In 1980, Hawking decided to write a book explaining the universe to ordinary readers. It explored questions about the origin, boundaries and possible end of the universe, the beginning of time and the possibility of a complete theory of everything. He completed the first draft in 1984.

During a visit to Switzerland, Hawking contracted pneumonia and required life support. A tracheotomy saved his life but permanently removed his ability to speak. Later, a computer expert named Walt Woltosz sent him a programme called the Equalizer, which enabled him to select words from a computer screen and communicate.

With the assistance of his student Brian Whitt, Hawking completed his book. “A Brief History of Time” was published in 1988 and made complex scientific ideas understandable to non-scientists. An updated and abridged version was released in 2005.

Hawking’s life and work reveal that appearances can be misleading. Though his body was severely disabled, his mind explored the farthest limits of space and time. He chose to ignore his physical difficulties and expected others to treat him in the same way. Through intelligence, humour, courage, determination and the support of others, Stephen Hawking overcame his crippling disease and became the “supernova of world physics.”

The lesson teaches us that physical limitations need not prevent intellectual achievement. Adversity can make us stronger when it is faced with hope, determination and courage. Hawking’s life proves that a powerful mind can rise above even the greatest challenges.
