Stephen William Hawking was one of the greatest theoretical physicists of the modern age. His extraordinary life demonstrates the power of intelligence, courage and determination. Though a severe physical illness gradually paralysed his body, it could not limit his brilliant mind.

Hawking was born on 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England, exactly three hundred years after the death of Galileo. His parents, Frank and Isobel Hawking, were not wealthy, but they valued education. As a child, Stephen was not a prodigy. He was slow in learning to read, his handwriting worried his teachers, and he remained only halfway up in his class. Nevertheless, he became interested in science at the age of eight. By fourteen, he had decided to pursue mathematics and physics.

His father wanted him to study medicine, but Stephen disliked biology because he found it imprecise. In 1959, at seventeen, he entered University College, Oxford, to study natural science and specialise in physics. Initially, he felt lonely and bored. Later, he became popular among his classmates, who found him lively, cheerful, adaptable and witty.

Hawking wished to pursue doctoral research at Cambridge, but he needed a First from Oxford. His examination result was on the borderline between a First and a Second. During the interview, he cleverly told the examiners that a First would take him to Cambridge, while a Second would keep him at Oxford. His wit impressed them, and he received a First.

Shortly after his twenty-first birthday, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Doctors predicted that he had only two years to live. Though the diagnosis initially pushed him into depression, he gradually realised that many worthwhile things remained to be done.

With Jane Wilde’s love and encouragement, he regained hope. He continued his research, challenged distinguished scientists and earned a reputation as a genius comparable to Einstein. Even after losing his voice following a tracheotomy, he communicated using a computer programme called the Equalizer.

His famous book, A Brief History of Time, was published in 1988. It made complex ideas about the universe understandable to ordinary readers. By overcoming his crippling illness and exploring the mysteries of time and space, Hawking became the “supernova of world physics.”

How did Stephen Hawking face illness and adversity? What role did Jane Wilde play in transforming his life?

Answer

Stephen Hawking’s life is an inspiring example of how courage, optimism and human support can transform adversity into achievement. His physical condition was extremely serious, but he refused to allow it to destroy his intellectual life.

During his third year at Oxford, Hawking began to become unusually clumsy. He sometimes fell without any apparent reason. Later, at Cambridge, he found it difficult to tie his shoes and speak clearly. Shortly after his twenty-first birthday in 1963, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. It was a rare and incurable disease that gradually destroyed the nerve cells in his brain and spinal cord. His doctors informed him that he might have only two more years to live.

The diagnosis pushed Hawking into deep depression. He became confused about his future and felt that there was nothing worthwhile to do. However, a dream in which he was going to be executed made him realise that many meaningful things remained to be accomplished. He also dreamt of sacrificing his life to help others. These dreams changed his attitude towards life.

Two years passed, but Hawking did not die. The progress of the disease slowed down. Although his future remained uncertain, he began to enjoy the present more than before. He understood that life was precious.

Jane Wilde played a major role in this transformation. Hawking met her at a New Year’s party at Saint Alban’s. She found him intelligent, eccentric, arrogant and interesting. When she met him after his discharge from the hospital, he had almost lost his will to live. Jane, however, was not discouraged by his physical or mental condition.

She was serious-minded, optimistic and deeply religious. She firmly believed that good could emerge from adversity. Her positive attitude restored Hawking’s hope. Their friendship grew, and they realised that together they could build something worthwhile. Hawking received a research fellowship at Caius College in 1965, and they married that same year.

Later, when Hawking developed pneumonia, Jane consented to the tracheotomy that saved his life, though it permanently removed his voice. Her support helped him survive difficult periods and continue his scientific work.

Thus, Hawking’s determination and Jane’s optimism enabled him to transform suffering into achievement. His life proves that adversities should make us better, not bitter.

Describe Stephen Hawking’s quest to understand the universe and the circumstances that led to the publication of A Brief History of Time.

Answer

Stephen Hawking devoted his life to understanding the origin, nature and future of the universe. His search for a complete explanation of the cosmos forms the central idea of “Quest for a Theory of Everything.”

On 29 April 1980, Hawking delivered his inaugural lecture as the new Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. The lecture was titled “Is the End in Sight for Theoretical Physics?” He surprised his listeners by suggesting that the end might be in sight. He invited them to join him in a journey through time and space in search of the “Holy Grail of science”—a single theory that could explain the universe and everything that happens within it.

Although Hawking sat silently in a wheelchair while one of his students read the lecture, his physical appearance could not conceal the power of his mind. At Cambridge, he became known for asking bold, unexpected and penetrating questions, even in the presence of distinguished scientists. His brilliance earned him a reputation as a genius comparable to Einstein.

In 1980, a practical need for money encouraged Hawking to begin a new project. He decided to write a book about the fascinating questions that had drawn him towards cosmology and quantum theory. He wanted to examine where the universe came from, whether it was infinite or had boundaries, whether it would end, whether time had a beginning and whether time could move backwards. Above all, he wished to explore the possibility of a complete theory of the universe.

Hawking wanted to make these difficult scientific concepts understandable to non-scientists. He completed the first draft in 1984. However, while revising it, he developed pneumonia during a visit to Switzerland. A tracheotomy saved his life but left him unable to speak.

The computer expert Walt Woltosz sent Hawking a communication programme called the Equalizer. It allowed him to select words from a computer screen. With this technology and the support of his student Brian Whitt, Hawking completed the book.

A Brief History of Time was published in 1988. It introduced ordinary readers to the mysteries of time, space, black holes and the universe. An updated and abridged edition appeared in 2005.

The book and Hawking’s life reveal that appearances can be misleading. Empty space may not be empty, black holes may not be completely black, and a physically disabled man can mentally travel beyond the boundaries of time and space. His quest made him the “supernova of world physics.”]
