4.A Draught of Kindness – Charles Dickens

“A Draught of Kindness” is an excerpt from Charles Dickens’ novel The Old Curiosity Shop. The lesson tells the story of Little Nell and her grandfather, who leave London to escape from cruel moneylenders. Their journey is difficult and uncertain, but the kindness they receive from simple village people gives them comfort and hope.

Little Nell and her grandfather travel through the open countryside. They are tired, hungry, and homeless. They pass through quiet villages, cottages, farms, ponds, fields, and narrow roads. Dickens describes the rural scenes in detail, showing the peaceful beauty of the countryside. Though the journey is hard, Nell and her grandfather continue walking because they have no safe place to stay.

One day, after walking for a long time, they become very tired. Nell looks around for a place where they can rest and buy some milk. She is shy and afraid of being refused. At last, she sees a cottage where a family is seated around a table. There is an old man sitting near the hearth, and Nell feels that he may be kind because he looks like a grandfather.

The family in the cottage welcomes Nell and her grandfather warmly. The old cottager speaks to them kindly and asks whether they are travelling far. Nell answers politely on behalf of her grandfather. The old man remembers London and speaks about his own son, who had gone away as a soldier and had died. He shares his memories with sorrow and affection. This creates an emotional bond between him and Nell’s grandfather.

The family gives Nell and her grandfather milk and food. Nell chooses the best pieces for her grandfather. The cottage is simple but clean and comfortable. Nell feels peaceful there because she has not experienced such comfort for a long time. The kindness of the family gives her a sense of safety and calmness.

After resting for some time, Nell and her grandfather decide to continue their journey. The cottager tells them that they may rest in a barn or travellers’ lodging nearby, but the old man insists that they must move forward. Nell also agrees to continue, though she is tired. She does not want to trouble the family.

Before they leave, the cottager’s wife notices that Nell’s feet are sore and blistered. Being a kind woman and a mother herself, she cannot allow the child to leave without helping her. She washes Nell’s feet and applies a simple remedy with great care and tenderness. This gentle act deeply touches Nell’s heart. Nell feels so grateful that she can say nothing except a heartfelt blessing.

As Nell and her grandfather leave, the whole family stands outside watching them. They wave their hands and say goodbye with kindness and affection. This shows that their short meeting has created a warm human connection.

Nell and her grandfather walk forward again, more slowly and painfully than before. After some distance, they hear the sound of wheels behind them. A cart driver stops near them and says that the people at the cottage had asked him to look out for them. He kindly offers them a lift. This becomes a great relief for Nell and her grandfather, who are too tired to continue walking. To them, the jolting cart feels like a comfortable carriage because it saves them from further suffering.

Nell soon falls asleep in the cart, showing how exhausted she is. Later, the driver stops near a bye lane and points out the way to the town. He directs them kindly and helps them continue their journey.

The title “A Draught of Kindness” is very meaningful. The word “draught” means a small drink. Just as a drink refreshes a tired traveller, the kindness shown by the cottage family refreshes Nell and her grandfather during their difficult journey. The lesson shows that even small acts of kindness can bring great comfort to people in distress.

The story teaches that kindness does not need wealth or power. The poor cottage family has only simple food and a humble home, but they share what they have with love. Their compassion gives strength and hope to the tired travellers. Through this lesson, Dickens reminds us that human kindness can make life’s hardships easier to bear.
