🌿 Trophic Cascade — Easy Point Notes

[🌿 Trophic Cascade — Easy Point Notes

  • Trophic Cascade is written by Camille T. Dungy.
  • The poem is set in Yellowstone National Park.
  • Gray wolves were reintroduced into the park.
  • The wolves hunted deer and reduced their number.
  • Earlier, deer had eaten and damaged young trees and plants.
  • When the number of deer decreased, trees began to grow taller.
  • Songbirds returned and built nests in the trees.
  • The birds scattered seeds and helped new bushes grow.
  • The bushes gave food and shelter to snowshoe hares.
  • Weasels, water shrews and voles also returned.
  • These small animals attracted birds of prey.
  • Hawks, falcons, bald eagles and kestrels returned.
  • Berry-producing plants attracted bears.
  • Bears ate berries, caught fish and hunted young deer.
  • Vultures and coyotes fed on what the bears left behind.
  • Their droppings scattered seeds and helped more plants grow.
  • Willows and other plants grew along the riverbanks.
  • The new growth attracted beavers.
  • Beavers built dams across streams.
  • The dams created homes for muskrats, tadpoles, insects and fish.
  • The dams slowed down the flow of the river.
  • The river began to flow in curves instead of flowing straight.
  • This change reduced the possibility of flooding.
  • Thus, the wolves indirectly changed even the river’s course.
  • The return of one species renewed the entire ecosystem.
  • The poem shows that all plants and animals are connected.
  • Every living being has an important role in nature.
  • The poet compares this natural change with becoming a mother.
  • Motherhood helped her discover a new part of herself.
  • It completely changed the direction of her life.
  • The poem connects ecological renewal with personal transformation.
  • It teaches us to protect nature and maintain ecological balance.]
