[🌿 Trophic Cascade — Paragraph Questions and Answers

🌿 1. What happened after gray wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park?

Answer:

After gray wolves were reintroduced (വീണ്ടും കൊണ്ടുവന്നത്) into Yellowstone National Park, they began hunting deer. As the number of deer decreased, the deer could no longer destroy young trees and plants through overgrazing (അമിതമായി മേയൽ). Trees grew taller, bushes returned and the natural balance of the region slowly improved. This single change began a chain of positive events throughout the ecosystem (ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥ).

🌿 2. How did the return of trees and bushes help birds and small animals?

Answer:

When trees began to grow taller, songbirds returned and built their nests in them. The birds scattered seeds, which helped new bushes and plants grow. These bushes provided food and shelter for snowshoe hares. Weasels, water shrews and voles also returned. Thus, the growth of trees and bushes created a safe habitat (വാസസ്ഥലം) for many birds and small animals.

🌿 3. How did the return of small animals attract birds of prey?

Answer:

The return of hares, voles and other small animals provided food for birds of prey (ഇരപിടിയൻ പക്ഷികൾ). Hawks, falcons, bald eagles and kestrels returned to the region. Their shadows could once again be seen over the streams and bushes. This shows that the return of even small animals can support larger animals and restore the food chain (ഭക്ഷ്യശൃംഖല).

🌿 4. How did the wolves indirectly help bears and other animals?

Answer:

The wolves reduced the number of deer and allowed bushes and berry-producing plants to grow. Bears returned because they could feed on the newly grown berries. Bears also caught fish and hunted young deer. Vultures and coyotes came to feed on the remains of their kills. Their droppings scattered more seeds, helping additional trees, bushes and berries grow. In this way, the wolves indirectly supported many other animals.

🌿 5. Explain the role of beavers in changing the Yellowstone ecosystem.

Answer:

As the number of deer decreased, willows and other plants grew along the riverbanks. These trees attracted beavers. The beavers built dams (അണകൾ) across the streams. Their dams created new water habitats for muskrats, tadpoles, insects and fish. The dams also slowed the flow of water and changed the shape of the river. Thus, beavers played an important part in restoring the ecosystem.

🌿 6. How did the reintroduction of wolves change the course of the river?

Answer:

Before the wolves returned, deer ate the plants growing along the riverbanks. Without enough plants, the river flowed straight and often flooded. After the wolves reduced the deer population, willows and other plants grew again along the banks. Beavers used these plants to build dams. The dams forced the river to meander (വളഞ്ഞൊഴുകുക) and reduced flooding. Therefore, the wolves indirectly changed even the course of the river.

🌿 7. Why is the title Trophic Cascade suitable for the poem?

Answer:

A trophic cascade (ഭക്ഷ്യശൃംഖലയിലെ തുടർമാറ്റം) is a chain of changes in an ecosystem caused by the increase or decrease of one species. In the poem, the return of gray wolves reduced the deer population. This allowed trees and bushes to grow. Birds, small animals, bears and beavers returned, and even the river changed its course. The title is suitable because it describes this continuous chain of natural renewal.

🌿 8. How does the poem show that all living beings are interconnected?

Answer:

The poem shows that no living being exists alone. Wolves control the deer population. Fewer deer allow trees and bushes to grow. Plants provide homes and food for birds and small animals. These animals attract predators (ഇരപിടിയന്മാർ). Willows bring beavers, whose dams support fish, insects and other water creatures. The poem therefore shows that every plant and animal has an important place in nature.

🌿 9. How does nature restore itself when its balance returns?

Answer:

Nature has the power to heal itself when the natural balance is restored (പുനഃസ്ഥാപിക്കുക). In Yellowstone, the absence of wolves had allowed deer to destroy trees and plants. When wolves were brought back, they controlled the deer population. Vegetation grew again, animals returned and the river became healthier. The poem teaches us that protecting important species can help an entire ecosystem recover.

🌿 10. How does the poet connect the return of wolves with her experience of motherhood?

Answer:

The poet compares the reintroduction of wolves to her own experience of becoming a mother. The return of one animal changed the entire Yellowstone landscape. In the same way, motherhood reintroduced the poet to herself in a new form. It changed her identity, feelings and view of life. Just as the ecosystem was never the same after the wolves returned, the poet’s life was never the same after she became a mother.

🌿 11. Explain the line, “All this life born from one hungry animal.”

Answer:

The “hungry animal” refers to the gray wolf. The wolf hunts deer for food, but this simple act produces many positive changes. Fewer deer allow plants to grow. The plants support birds, hares, bears, beavers and many other creatures. Even the river changes because of these developments. The line means that the return of one animal can bring new life to an entire ecosystem.

🌿 12. What is the central message of Trophic Cascade?

Answer:

The poem teaches that all parts of nature are closely connected. The removal of one species can disturb an entire ecosystem, while its return can restore natural balance. It also shows that predators are essential for maintaining healthy environments. By comparing ecological renewal with motherhood, the poet suggests that a single change can completely transform both nature and human life.]
