The Barber's Trade Union is a powerful short story by Mulk Raj Anand that highlights the problems of caste discrimination and the importance of self-respect, education, and unity. The story is narrated by a boy who recalls his childhood friendship with Chandu, a barber's son belonging to a lower caste.
Chandu is an intelligent, cheerful, and ambitious boy. Although he belongs to a barber's family, he dreams of living with dignity and improving his life. Unlike other villagers, he believes that no profession is inferior and that everyone deserves equal respect. The narrator admires Chandu, but his own family dislikes their friendship because of caste differences.
As Chandu grows older, he begins to think differently from the traditional village barbers. He wears modern clothes, learns about the latest hairstyles, and wants to make barbering a respected profession. However, the village elders and the landlord become angry because they believe that a barber should remain humble and never behave like educated or upper-caste people. They insult him and even refuse to let another barber cut his hair.
Instead of giving up, Chandu becomes more determined. He works hard, saves money, and buys a bicycle, which becomes a symbol of progress and independence. Although people laugh at him when he learns to ride it, he continues practising until he succeeds. His courage and confidence inspire the narrator.
Later, Chandu cleverly exposes the hypocrisy of the village elders. Since he refuses to shave them, they are forced to walk around with long, untidy beards. The villagers begin to laugh at them, and the elders lose their pride and authority. Chandu then opens a modern barber shop near the town, where he earns respect and attracts many customers through his skill and hard work.
Finally, Chandu unites the barbers of the surrounding villages and forms a trade union. Together they work for better opportunities and fair treatment. The story ends on a hopeful note, showing that unity, determination, education, and self-respect can overcome social injustice and discrimination.
