എഡ്ഗർ അലൻ പോയുടെ The Tell-Tale Heart കുറ്റബോധത്തെയും മാനസിക അസ്വസ്ഥതയെയും അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ചെറുകഥയാണ്. പേര് പറയാത്ത കഥാനായകൻ താൻ ഭ്രാന്തനല്ലെന്ന് ആവർത്തിച്ചു പറയുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഒരു വൃദ്ധന്റെ കഴുകന്റെ കണ്ണുപോലെയുള്ള നീലക്കണ്ണിനോട് അയാൾക്ക് കടുത്ത ഭയവും വെറുപ്പും തോന്നുന്നു.
ഏഴു രാത്രികളിൽ അയാൾ രഹസ്യമായി വൃദ്ധന്റെ മുറിയിൽ കടക്കുന്നു. എട്ടാം രാത്രിയിൽ വൃദ്ധൻ ഉണരുകയും കണ്ണ് തുറക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. വൃദ്ധന്റെ ഹൃദയമിടിപ്പ് ശക്തമാകുന്നതായി തോന്നിയ കഥാനായകൻ അയാളെ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. മൃതദേഹം കഷണങ്ങളാക്കി നിലത്തെ പലകകൾക്കടിയിൽ ഒളിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
