[Stammer – Easy Point Notes

K. Satchidanandan | XII English

About the Poet

  • K. Satchidanandan is an Indian poet.
  • He writes in Malayalam and English.
  • He is also a critic and translator.
  • He is an important figure in modern Malayalam poetry.

Central Idea

  • The poem offers a different view of stammer.
  • It explores speech, silence, meaning and action.
  • Stammer becomes a metaphor for difficulties in expression.
  • The poet encourages respect for different voices.

Stanza 1

  • The poet presents stammer as a mode of speech.
  • He challenges negative attitudes towards it.
  • A person’s ideas matter more than fluent speech.
  • The opening encourages acceptance and respect.

Stanza 2

  • Stammer is described as silence between a word and its meaning.
  • It suggests difficulty in expressing an idea.
  • The poet compares this with the gap between words and deeds.
  • Saying something does not always lead to doing it.
  • For example, promising to help is different from actually helping.

Stanza 3

  • The poet asks whether stammer came before or after language.
  • He wonders whether it is a dialect or a language itself.
  • These questions make us rethink our ideas about speech.
  • Even linguists cannot answer easily.
  • Their hesitation creates irony.

Stanza 4

  • Stammering becomes an offering to the “God of meanings”.
  • This image gives dignity to the effort of speaking.
  • The poem then moves from an individual to a whole community.
  • A society’s stammer may suggest hesitation to address important issues.
  • When everyone shares it, stammer becomes like their mother tongue.
  • “Just as it is with us now” includes the poet and his society.

Stanza 5

  • The poet imagines that God stammered while creating human beings.
  • This is a poetic suggestion.
  • Human words can carry different meanings.
  • Context helps us understand those meanings.
  • Prayers and commands represent different kinds of human speech.
  • Like poetry, human expression includes pauses and uncertainty.
  • “Like poetry” is the closing simile.
