Radha, Just Radha – Summary

[ Radha, Just Radha –  Summary

By M. Mukundan

“Radha, Just Radha” tells the story of a young college student who faces a strange and painful situation: the people close to her suddenly fail to recognise her.

While returning from college, Radha sees Suresh at a bus stop. She is happy because they had spent the previous evening together at the beach. She approaches him and offers him a magazine containing Samuel Beckett’s work, “Ping.” However, Suresh behaves as though she is a stranger. He denies knowing her or having gone to the beach with her. At first, Radha thinks he is joking. When he continues to reject her, she becomes hurt and confused. Suresh boards a bus and leaves.

Radha walks home, hoping to find comfort there. On the way, even Bhaskaran, the local tea shop owner, does not recognise her. When she reaches home, her father also asks who she is. Shocked, she calls him “Daddy,” but he treats her as an unknown visitor. Her mother, Madhavi, does not recognise her either.

Her parents speak kindly and offer to help her, but they refuse to accept that she is their daughter. Radha desperately reminds them of their life together. She recalls how her mother has cooked for her for eighteen years and how her father helped her with mathematics, performed her writing ceremony and took her to the cinema. Her father dismisses these memories as imaginary stories.

Radha tries to enter her room, but her mother stops her. Her parents believe that she is mentally disturbed. They offer to let her stay for the night, yet insist that the house is not her home. Their rejection leaves her feeling helpless and completely alone.

Finally, Radha leaves the house in tears. As she walks into the gathering darkness, the children and even the natural world seem to regard her as a stranger. The story ends without explaining why everyone fails to recognise her.

Through Radha’s disturbing experience, M. Mukundan explores identity, loneliness and the need to belong. The story makes us think about how deeply our sense of self is connected to the recognition and acceptance of others.]
