[Radha, Just Radha – Essay Questions and Answers

By M. Mukundan

📝 1. Describe Radha’s experiences in “Radha, Just Radha.”

M. Mukundan’s “Radha, Just Radha” tells the story of a college student who suddenly becomes a stranger to everyone around her. Through her painful experience, the writer explores identity, loneliness and rejection.

While returning from college, Radha sees Suresh at a bus stop. She approaches him happily because they had spent the previous evening together at the beach. She offers him a magazine containing Samuel Beckett’s “Ping.” However, Suresh says that he does not know her. At first, Radha thinks he is joking. His repeated denial hurts her, and he leaves by bus.

Radha returns home, hoping to find comfort. However, her father and mother also fail to recognise her. They ask who she is and where she comes from. Radha reminds them of their shared memories. She recalls her mother cooking for her, her father helping her with mathematics and their recent cinema visit. Her father dismisses these memories as imaginary stories.

Her parents believe that she is mentally disturbed. They offer her shelter for one night but refuse to accept that she is their daughter. Unable to bear their rejection, Radha leaves the house in tears.

At the end, even nature seems to deny her identity. The reason for these strange events remains unexplained. Radha’s experience shows the deep pain of losing love, recognition and a sense of belonging.

📝 2. Discuss identity and belonging as the main themes of “Radha, Just Radha.”

In “Radha, Just Radha,” M. Mukundan explores a troubling question: what happens when others refuse to recognise who we are? Radha remains certain of her identity, but the people around her reject it.

The first rejection comes from Suresh. Radha remembers their meeting at the beach, but he denies knowing her. This makes her feel confused and hurt. She then returns home, expecting the comfort of her family.

The rejection by her parents is even more painful. They do not accept her as their daughter. Radha tries to prove her identity through memories of childhood and family life. However, these memories mean nothing to them. Her father treats them as made-up stories.

Radha also loses her sense of belonging. Her mother stops her from entering her room, and her parents insist that their house is not her home. Although they offer her temporary shelter, they treat her as an outsider. Their kindness cannot replace the love and recognition she needs.

The ending extends her isolation to the natural world. Everything seems to regard her as a stranger. The story suggests that our relationships strongly influence our sense of identity. Through Radha’s suffering, it reveals the human need to be recognised, loved and accepted.

📝 3. Prepare a character sketch of Radha.

Radha, the central character in M. Mukundan’s “Radha, Just Radha,” is an eighteen-year-old college student. She is affectionate and deeply attached to the people close to her.

At the beginning, Radha is cheerful and eager to speak to Suresh. Her happiness on seeing him shows her affection for him. She offers him a magazine and reminds him of his planned visit to her house. When he denies knowing her, she first believes that he is joking. This shows her trust in their relationship.

Radha turns to her family when she feels upset. She expects her home to provide comfort and safety. Her parents’ failure to recognise her therefore shocks her deeply.

She makes repeated attempts to prove her identity. She recalls her mother’s care, her father’s help with her studies and their time together. These memories reveal how much she values her family relationships.

Radha openly expresses her pain through questions, tears and desperate appeals. Yet she continues to insist that she is their daughter. Her repeated efforts show her determination to make others recognise her.

Finally, she leaves the house feeling helpless and alone. Radha represents the suffering of a person whose identity and place in the world are denied by others.

📝 4. Explain how the ending of “Radha, Just Radha” creates a powerful emotional effect.

The ending of “Radha, Just Radha” is deeply moving because Radha loses the comfort of both her family and the world around her.

After Suresh denies knowing her, Radha hopes that everything will become normal at home. However, her parents also treat her as a stranger. Her memories and desperate appeals fail to convince them. They offer her shelter but deny her place as their daughter.

Radha finally wipes her tears and walks away. This moment is painful because she leaves the very home where she expects love and protection. She has nowhere to go and no one to turn to.

The description of the surroundings strengthens this sadness. Children look at her without recognition. Birds seem to see her as a stranger. The restless trees, strong wind, crashing sea and spreading darkness reflect her troubled feelings. To Radha, the whole world appears to join in denying her identity.

The writer gives no explanation for these strange events. Readers are left with Radha’s confusion and loneliness. This unanswered mystery makes the ending disturbing and memorable. It encourages us to think about identity, human relationships and the pain of being rejected.]
