[E IS FOR E-WASTE – Detailed Summary

Ellen Banda-Aaku

Plus One English Literature | Unit – Green Imagination

Introduction

E is for E-Waste is an interesting and humorous story written by Ellen Banda-Aaku. It tells the story of a schoolboy named Saku, who is asked to write an assignment about ways to save the planet.

Saku wants to prepare the best assignment in his class to prove his intelligence and impress Tasha, a new girl whom he likes. While preparing his homework, he learns about recycling, reusing materials, reducing pollution and the proper disposal of electronic waste.

The story also describes a funny incident involving Saku's parents and a rat hiding in their garage.

Although Saku successfully impresses his teacher and classmates with his assignment, he faces an embarrassing situation at the end when he cannot explain what the letter 'E' in e-waste stands for.

The story highlights environmental protection, responsible waste disposal, family relationships, student motivation and the importance of learning.

Detailed Summary

🧑‍🏫 1. Mr North Gives an Assignment

The story begins in Saku's classroom. His class teacher, Mr North, gives the students an assignment about ways to save the planet.

While distributing the homework, Mr North makes a sarcastic remark. He says that even Saku should be able to write an assignment on the topic.

Saku feels insulted because the teacher's words suggest that he is not very intelligent.

However, Saku knows that Mr North often makes such comments to provoke students and encourage them to prove him wrong.

Normally, Saku might have ignored the remark. But this time he feels deeply embarrassed because the teacher has made the comment in front of Tasha.

💕 2. Saku Wants to Impress Tasha

Tasha is a new girl in Saku's class. She has dimpled cheeks and bushy eyebrows.

Saku has been attracted to her ever since she joined the class. He cannot stop thinking about her.

He compares her face to a piece of pink bubble gum stuck in the pocket of his school trousers.

Saku has tried to speak to Tasha twice. However, both times he becomes so nervous that he cannot find the right words.

He simply stares at her with his mouth open. Tasha looks at him as though he is foolish.

Therefore, when Mr North makes fun of him, Saku decides to prove that he is clever.

He becomes determined to write the best assignment in the class so that Tasha will admire him.

🌳 3. Saku Sits Under an Avocado Tree

After returning home from school, Saku sits under an avocado tree near his house.

The tree grows very close to the building. Its branches are so near the dining-room window that Saku can sometimes pick an avocado simply by stretching his arm outside.

Saku thinks this is wonderful.

However, his mother does not agree. She worries that the roots of the tree may damage the foundations of their house. She also fears that the tree may fall and destroy the building.

His father believes that the tree is harmless.

Saku understands that his mother worries too much and that his father does not want the trouble of cutting down the tree.

His mother has been asking his father to remove it for ten years.

Saku enjoys sitting in the shade of the tree because it is a peaceful place for doing his homework.

✍️ 4. Saku Begins His Assignment

Saku opens his notebook and begins thinking about different ways to protect the environment.

Mr North has encouraged the students to be creative in their assignments.

Saku writes the title Ways to Save our Planet Earth.

However, after writing the title, he finds it difficult to continue.

He knows many methods of protecting the environment, but he cannot easily arrange his thoughts into proper sentences.

He begins thinking about recycling, reusing materials, conserving water and saving electricity.

He wants his essay to be imaginative and impressive.

🌍 5. Saku's Ideas for Saving the Planet

Saku knows several simple methods of environmental protection.

He understands that water used for washing food can be reused for watering plants.

Similarly, water used for rinsing clothes can be used for washing a car.

He knows that repairing leaking pipes helps prevent the wastage of water.

He also believes that people should switch off lights when they are not needed.

Saku understands that carrying reusable shopping bags is better than taking new plastic bags from shops because plastic bags do not decompose naturally.

He also knows that trees produce the oxygen we breathe. Therefore, he believes that cutting down the avocado tree is not good for the environment.

Although Saku has many useful ideas, he struggles to organise them into a good essay.

📂 6. His Mother Searches for Documents

While Saku is thinking about his assignment, he hears the garage door opening.

His mother comes out of the garage and asks him which box contains her documents.

The garage is filled with old boxes and unused household items.

Saku does not know where the documents are kept.

Instead of continuing his homework, he gets up and joins his mother in the garage.

He later realises that this was his first mistake.

If he had remained seated with his notebook, his mother might have left him alone to complete his work.

📦 7. The Garage Full of Unwanted Things

Saku describes the condition of their garage.

Although it is meant for parking a car, his father has never parked his car inside it.

The garage is so full of unnecessary things that Saku jokes that even the car might get lost among them.

There are many old boxes and household objects.

The garage contains an old refrigerator, an even older freezer and his father's old computer.

Saku's first tricycle is also stored there. It is still bright blue but has only two wheels.

There are also old bicycles and a lawnmower with a faulty motor.

The garage has become a place where the family stores broken and unwanted things.

🗣️ 8. The Argument Between Saku's Parents

Saku's mother cannot find her documents.

She becomes angry and goes to call his father.

It is half past five in the evening, and Saku's father has returned from work.

He is sitting in front of the television, wearing a vest and blue-and-white striped pyjama trousers.

Saku's mother reminds him that she had asked him to label the boxes before storing them in the garage.

However, he had refused, saying that labels were unnecessary.

Now nobody knows which box contains the documents.

His father comes to the garage and looks around.

He admits that everything is somewhere in the garage, but he cannot identify the correct box.

He even asks Saku where his mother's documents are.

Saku has no idea.

His mother tells his father to leave the boy alone and allow him to do his homework.

Saku quickly returns to his chair and pretends to be busy.

🖥️ 9. The Discussion About Electronic Waste

Saku's mother complains that the garage is full of rubbish.

She points at the old computer and asks her husband to throw away the unwanted things.

However, Saku's father explains that electrical and electronic equipment should not be thrown into ordinary rubbish heaps.

He says that some of these items contain harmful substances that can pollute the environment.

His mother immediately reminds him that his car releases black smoke and causes air pollution.

She has been asking him to get rid of the car for years.

This argument gives Saku another idea for his homework.

He quickly writes a note about reducing pollution to save the planet.

♻️ 10. Saku Learns About E-Waste

Saku's father explains that unwanted electronic equipment is called e-waste.

He says that e-waste should be taken to a special processing or recycling plant.

It should not be mixed with ordinary household rubbish.

Saku finds this information very interesting.

He believes that writing about e-waste will make his assignment different from those of his classmates.

He quickly writes that e-waste includes old refrigerators and computers.

At first, he also includes bicycles in his list. However, he is not sure whether bicycles are electronic waste, so he crosses out the word.

He then writes that e-waste should be disposed of through a proper processing or recycling system to prevent pollution.

Saku feels pleased because he has discovered an interesting topic that Mr North has not taught in class.

😠 11. The Argument Continues

Saku's parents continue arguing.

His father tries to explain more about electronic waste, but his mother repeatedly interrupts him.

She does not want to hear complicated explanations.

She simply wants the garage cleaned and her documents found.

Saku agrees that his father sometimes makes simple matters complicated.

His mother often says that his father uses too many difficult words because he reads too many books.

Saku does not want to ask his father directly about the assignment because he fears that his father will give him a long lecture.

He only wants enough information to impress Tasha and prove Mr North wrong.

However, he secretly hopes that his father will continue explaining e-waste so that he can collect more points for his essay.

🐀 12. A Rat Creates Confusion

Suddenly, a big black rat appears in the garage.

It begins running between the feet of Saku's parents.

His mother screams in fear.

His father also screams.

Saku screams even louder and jumps onto his chair.

Unfortunately, his feet tear through the canvas seat of the chair.

He falls over onto the muddy ground.

His legs become trapped in the chair, but he manages to free himself.

Meanwhile, the rat continues running around the garage.

The peaceful evening suddenly turns into a scene of complete confusion.

👖 13. The Rat Enters Father's Trousers

The funniest incident occurs when the rat runs up Saku's father's pyjama trousers.

His father becomes extremely frightened.

He grips the rat above his knee and begins stamping his feet.

Saku compares his movements to those of a crazy gumboot dancer.

His mother jumps up and down, shouting that there is a rat.

His father angrily replies that he already knows what it is.

Finally, he pulls down his trousers and jumps out of them.

The rat falls to the ground and begins running away.

The incident is both frightening and humorous.

🧹 14. The Family Tries to Catch the Rat

As the rat runs away, Saku tries to hit it with his notebook.

However, he repeatedly misses.

His mother also tries to strike the rat with a broomstick.

Instead of helping each other, they get in one another's way.

The rat finally escapes under the hedge into the neighbour's garden.

By this time, the whole family is breathless and confused.

The unexpected incident brings their argument to an end.

👩‍🦳 15. Mrs Moyo Arrives

Mrs Moyo, their curious neighbour from across the road, hears the noise.

She comes to the gate and asks whether everything is all right.

She finds Saku and his parents standing near the garage, exhausted by the incident.

Saku's father is extremely embarrassed because he is standing without his trousers.

He tries to hide his underpants by pulling down his vest.

He angrily tells his wife to find her own documents and walks away.

Saku's mother tells Mrs Moyo that everything is fine.

She then picks up her husband's trousers and slippers and hurries into the house.

Mrs Moyo walks away smiling.

The entire incident creates a humorous picture of family life.

📓 16. Saku's Notebook Is Damaged

After the confusion ends, Saku suddenly remembers his homework.

He looks at his notebook and is shocked.

During the attempt to catch the rat, the notebook has become muddy and torn.

Saku feels worried because he has to present his assignment at school the next day.

However, he does not give up.

He prepares his essay on a separate piece of paper.

He includes the ideas he has collected about recycling, reusing materials, reducing pollution, preserving natural resources and managing electronic waste.

He gives his essay a new title: E is for E-Waste.

📖 17. Saku Presents His Assignment

The next day, Saku stands before his classmates to read his assignment.

Mr North asks him where his notebook is.

Saku begins explaining that a big rat appeared while he was writing his assignment.

However, Mr North does not allow him to complete the explanation.

He tells Saku to read whatever he has prepared.

Saku begins reading his essay from the piece of paper.

He speaks about recycling, reusing materials, reducing pollution and conserving natural resources.

He also explains the importance of handling e-waste responsibly.

His assignment contains information that the class has not previously discussed.

👏 18. Saku Impresses Everyone

When Saku finishes reading his assignment, the whole class applauds.

Even Tasha claps.

Saku feels extremely happy because he has finally impressed the girl he admires.

Mr North also smiles.

He is pleased that Saku has worked hard and included new information in his essay.

He especially appreciates Saku's discussion of e-waste because the topic has not been taught in class.

Mr North proudly tells the students that Saku has made an extra effort by including subjects they have not yet studied.

Saku feels that he has finally proved his teacher wrong.

He is no longer the foolish student Mr North had suggested he was.

❓ 19. The Unexpected Question

Just when Saku is enjoying his success, a student asks him a simple question.

The student wants to know what the letter 'E' in e-waste stands for.

The classroom becomes completely silent.

Everyone waits for Saku's answer.

Saku suddenly becomes nervous.

Although he has written an impressive essay about e-waste, he does not know the full meaning of the term.

He has learned how electronic waste should be handled, but he has forgotten to find out what the letter 'E' represents.

He swallows nervously and remains silent.

💡 20. Tasha Gives the Answer

At this embarrassing moment, a voice comes from the back of the classroom.

It is Tasha.

She explains that the letter 'E' in e-waste stands for electronic.

Thus, e-waste means electronic waste.

The story ends with Tasha answering the question that Saku cannot answer.

The ending is humorous because Saku has worked so hard to impress Tasha, yet she has to help him with the simplest question about his topic.

It also reminds readers that learning a subject requires understanding its basic concepts, not merely collecting impressive information.

Significance of the Title – E is for E-Waste

The title E is for E-Waste is meaningful and humorous.

The letter 'E' stands for electronic, and e-waste means electronic waste.

The story focuses on Saku's discovery of the importance of properly disposing of unwanted electronic equipment.

The title also becomes important in the final scene.

Although Saku writes an excellent essay about e-waste, he does not know what the letter 'E' stands for.

Tasha finally gives the answer.

Thus, the title connects the environmental message of the story with its humorous ending.

It also reminds students that they should understand the basic meaning of the topics they study.
