[📝 THE CYBERSPACE – Paragraph Questions and Answers
✍️ Esther Dyson
Class XI English | Unit 6 – Leaps and Bounds🌐 1. How does Esther Dyson describe cyberspace?
Esther Dyson describes cyberspace as a “giant and unbounded world of virtual real estate.” Just as real estate contains different areas such as parks, shopping malls and school districts, cyberspace also contains different virtual spaces. Some are privately owned, some are common spaces, some are suitable for children, while others are better avoided. This metaphor helps us understand the varied nature of cyberspace.
🚫 2. Why does Dyson believe that censorship will not work in cyberspace?
According to Dyson, censorship fundamentally misunderstands the nature of cyberspace. The Internet is not like television, which can send unwanted messages directly to viewers. In cyberspace, users generally choose where they visit, what they see and what they do. It is also easier to avoid an undesirable place online than an unpleasant area in the physical world. Therefore, Dyson favours responsible choice and self-rule rather than excessive external control.
🧭 3. Why is cyberspace described as a “voluntary destination”?
Cyberspace is called a “voluntary destination” because users decide where they want to go and what they want to see. People do not simply get onto the Internet; they visit particular online destinations according to their interests. Dyson believes that community standards are necessary, but these standards should be set by the cyber communities themselves. Thus, she supports self-rule in cyberspace.
💻 4. What are the three major areas of services available in cyberspace?
Dyson identifies three major areas in cyberspace. The first is private email conversations, which are similar to telephone or voicemail conversations. The second is information and entertainment services, where users can obtain texts, games, presentations and other materials. The third is “real communities”, where groups of people communicate through posted messages. Some of these communities are supervised by moderators and have rules to ensure proper interaction.
👥 5. What advantages do cyber communities have over terrestrial communities?
Cyber communities offer greater freedom of choice than terrestrial communities. In the physical world, minority groups and individual preferences may be suppressed by majority rule. In cyberspace, communities of any size and kind can flourish. People choose communities according to their interests rather than being restricted by geography. If they dislike the rules of a cyber community, they can simply leave it. Thus, cyberspace provides greater freedom, choice and flexibility. ]
