[കവയിത്രി: വിസ്‌വാവ ഷിംബോർസ്ക
ഉടമയുടെ മരണശേഷം ഒരു പൂച്ച അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ഏകാന്തതയും ആശയക്കുഴപ്പവുമാണ് ഈ കവിത അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. മരണം എന്താണെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാകാത്ത പൂച്ച, ഉടമ തിരിച്ചുവരുമെന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. വീട്ടിലെ സാധനങ്ങളെല്ലാം പഴയതുപോലെയുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഉടമയില്ലാത്തതിനാൽ എല്ലാം മാറിയതായി അതിനു തോന്നുന്നു. പരിചിതമായ കാൽപ്പാടുകളുടെ ശബ്ദമില്ല. ഭക്ഷണം നൽകുന്നതും മറ്റൊരാളാണ്.
പൂച്ച അലമാരകളിലും തട്ടുകളിലും പരവതാനിക്കടിയിലും ഉടമയെ തിരയുന്നു. ഒടുവിൽ ഉറങ്ങുകയും കാത്തിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഉടമ തിരിച്ചെത്തുമ്പോൾ തന്റെ പിണക്കം കാണിക്കാനാണ് അതിന്റെ തീരുമാനം. എന്നാൽ ഉടമ ഇനി മടങ്ങിവരില്ലെന്ന സത്യം വായനക്കാരെ വേദനിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ വേർപാട് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന ശൂന്യതയും ദുഃഖവുമാണ് കവിതയുടെ പ്രധാന ആശയം.]
