📝 IS SOCIETY DEAD? – Paragraph Questions and Answers

✍️ Andrew Sullivan
Class XI English | Unit 6 – Leaps and Bounds
🏙️ 1. What change does Andrew Sullivan notice in New York?
Andrew Sullivan notices that New York has become unusually quiet. The city once had a lively mixture of yells, chatter, hustle and other sounds. During his visit, however, he finds much of this noise missing. As he observes the people on the streets, he realizes that many of them are absorbed in their personal music players and are disconnected from their surroundings.
🎧 2. Who are the “i-Pod people”? How does Sullivan describe them?
The “i-Pod people” are those who walk around listening to music through their personal devices. Sullivan notices the little white wires hanging from their ears or tucked into their clothes. Each person seems to live in a private musical world, walking to his or her own soundtrack and remaining almost unaware of the surrounding world.
🫧 3. What does Sullivan mean by the expression “MP3 cocoon”?
The “MP3 cocoon” refers to the private world created by people listening continuously to their personal music players. Like a cocoon, it separates them from their surroundings. They may bump into others, ignore small social cues and shut themselves away in their own private bubble. Thus, the expression represents the social isolation created by personal technology
🔇 4. How do iPod users become disconnected from the people around them?
iPod users become so absorbed in their music that they often fail to notice what is happening around them. Some unconsciously make strange sounds or snap their fingers to the rhythm of the music. When another person says “Excuse me,” there may be no response. Though surrounded by people, they remain isolated in their own musical world.
❓ 5. What is the significance of the title Is Society Dead?
The title Is Society Dead? raises a question about the effect of personal technology on social interaction. Sullivan observes that people can be physically close to one another while remaining mentally isolated in their private worlds. The title therefore invites readers to consider whether increasing dependence on personal technology is weakening communication and our awareness of the people around us.
