A Three Wheeled Revolution – Paragraph Questions

[🔵1. How did Irfan Alam get the idea of starting a business connected with rickshaw pullers?

When Irfan Alam was seventeen, he was travelling in a rickshaw and became very thirsty. He asked the rickshaw puller for water, but the man said that he could not afford to buy and keep water bottles. Irfan immediately saw a business opportunity. The next day, he gave eight water bottles each to five rickshaw pullers and asked them to sell them to passengers. The profit was shared between Irfan and the pullers. This simple experiment gave him the idea of creating additional income through rickshaws.

🔵2. What was Irfan Alam’s business proposal in Business Baazigar? Why did he refuse the prize money?

In 2006, Irfan participated in the television programme Business Baazigar. He proposed organising the rickshaw sector and using space on rickshaws for advertisements. He also suggested selling water, juice, biscuits, mobile cards and newspapers to passengers. He won the competition and was offered ₹150 lakh as seed money. However, Irfan wanted to provide insurance, identity cards and uniforms to rickshaw pullers and run the venture as a not-for-profit organisation. As the organisers did not agree with his model, he refused the prize money.

🔵3. Why did Irfan Alam start SammaaN? How did his business idea become a social venture?

Irfan came to understand the difficult lives of rickshaw pullers. Most of them did not own their rickshaws and had to pay ₹30–₹40 as daily rent. Their remaining income was hardly enough to support their families. Irfan wanted to create an organisation that would increase their income and improve their lives. Thus, his business idea gradually became a social cause. In 2007, he started SammaaN with seed money from his family and friends.

🔵4. How does SammaaN help rickshaw pullers improve their income and become owners of their rickshaws?

SammaaN helps rickshaw pullers get bank loans to buy their own rickshaws by standing as their guarantor. Instead of paying rent throughout their lives, they can repay the bank loan in instalments and finally own the vehicle. SammaaN also provides additional income through advertisements displayed on the rickshaws. The pullers can sell water, juice, prepaid mobile cards and other products to passengers. These measures have increased their income by about 30–40 per cent.

🔵5. What facilities and other benefits does SammaaN provide to rickshaw pullers and their families?

SammaaN provides rickshaw pullers with training in basic etiquette and traffic rules. It also gives them uniforms, identity cards, health insurance and accident insurance. The organisation helps them obtain bank loans and become owners of their vehicles. Free evening classes called SammaaN Gyaan are provided for the children and spouses of the operators. Above all, SammaaN gives the rickshaw pullers a sense of dignity, belonging and empowerment.

🔵6. What are Irfan Alam’s views on the future of rickshaws and entrepreneurship? What advice does he give young people?

Irfan believes that cycle rickshaws are not a dying mode of transport. They are useful for short journeys, especially to and from metro stations, and are also environment-friendly. SammaaN even planned to develop a solar-powered fibreglass rickshaw. Irfan encourages young people to consider entrepreneurship as a career because it can help tackle unemployment. He advises them to dream big, identify opportunities and take calculated risks to achieve their dreams.]
