📘 SENTENCE TRANSFORMATION

 [📘 SENTENCE TRANSFORMATION (Page -77)

Simple Rules, Examples and Textbook Questions with Answers

🌟 1. What is Sentence Transformation?

Sentence Transformation means rewriting a sentence using a different expression without changing its original meaning.

In this lesson, we learn three important expressions:

  1. Had Better – To give advice.
  2. Would Rather – To express preference.
  3. No Sooner…Than – To show that one action happened immediately after another.

📝 2. IMPORTANT RULES WITH EXAMPLES

🟢 Rule 1: HAD BETTER

Meaning: Giving Strong Advice

We use had better to advise someone to do something.

Structure:

Subject + had better + Base Verb

Examples:

  1. You should study well.
✅ You had better study well.

  2. You should consult a doctor.
✅ You had better consult a doctor.

  3. It is wise to save money.
✅ You had better save money.

Remember: Do not use to after had better.

❌ You had better to study.

✅ You had better study.

🔵 Rule 2: WOULD RATHER

Meaning: Expressing Preference

We use would rather to say what someone prefers.

A. When the Subject Prefers to Do Something

Structure:

Subject + would rather + Base Verb + than + Base Verb

Examples:

  1. I prefer tea to coffee.
✅ I would rather drink tea than coffee.

  2. She prefers walking to driving.
✅ She would rather walk than drive.

  3. He prefers reading to watching TV.
✅ He would rather read than watch TV.

B. Present Preference – Another Person

We use would rather + person + past tense when we want another person to do something now or in the future.

Structure:

Subject + would rather + Person + Past Tense

Examples:

  1. I want you to stay here.
✅ I would rather you stayed here.

  2. Mother wants me to study well.
✅ Mother would rather I studied well.

  3. The teacher wants students to be punctual.
✅ The teacher would rather the students were punctual.

Remember: The past tense here expresses a present or future preference, not a past action.

C. Past Preference – Another Person

We use would rather + person + had + past participle (V3) to express a preference about something that happened in the past.

Structure:

Subject + would rather + Person + had + V3

Examples:

  1. I wish you had arrived earlier.
✅ I would rather you had arrived earlier.

  2. Mother wishes her son had studied well.
✅ Mother would rather her son had studied well.

  3. The teacher wishes the students had completed their work.
✅ The teacher would rather the students had completed their work.

Remember: This structure is used to express a wish or preference about a past action that cannot now be changed.

🟣 Rule 3: NO SOONER…THAN

Meaning: One Action Happened Immediately After Another

We use No sooner…than to show that one action happened immediately after another.

Structure:

No sooner + had + Subject + V3 + than + Subject + Past Verb

Examples:

1. The bell rang. Immediately, the students entered the classroom.

✅ No sooner had the bell rung than the students entered the classroom.

2. The teacher entered the classroom. Immediately, the students stood up.

✅ No sooner had the teacher entered than the students stood up.

3. It started raining. Immediately, we went inside.

✅ No sooner had it started raining than we went inside.

Remember:

  • Begin the sentence with No sooner.
  • Use had + subject + V3.
  • Use than, not when.

❌ No sooner had he arrived when it rained.

✅ No sooner had he arrived than it rained.

[Sentence Transformation എന്നാൽ അർത്ഥം മാറ്റാതെ വാക്യത്തിന്റെ ഘടന മാറ്റിയെഴുതുന്നതാണ്.

  • Had Better: ഉപദേശം നൽകാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
  • Would Rather: ഇഷ്ടമോ മുൻഗണനയോ പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
  • Would Rather + Past Tense: മറ്റൊരാൾ ഇപ്പോൾ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഭാവിയിൽ ചെയ്യണമെന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന കാര്യം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
  • Would Rather + Had + V3:
