📘 The Serang of Ranaganji – Paragraph Questions and Answers

[📘 The Serang of Ranaganji – Paragraph Questions and Answers
Dr A. J. Cronin
🚢 1. How does the story introduce Hasan, the serang of the Ranaganji?
Hasan is the Indian serang or quartermaster of the Ranaganji. He is a very ugly native seaman with short legs and a large, disproportionate head. He quietly supervises the crew loading the baggage. Though his appearance is unimpressive, his later actions reveal his extraordinary courage and nobility.
👩 2. Who was Miss Jope-Smith? What was her attitude towards Hasan?
Miss Jope-Smith was a first-class passenger on the Ranaganji. She was over thirty and tried to look younger. She judged Hasan only by his physical appearance and called him an “absurdly comic creature.” She even felt that he hardly looked human. Her remarks reveal her prejudice and superficial nature.
🌊 3. Describe the early part of the voyage of the Ranaganji.
The voyage from Liverpool began in calm and clear weather. The ship crossed the Bay of Biscay, passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and sailed across the Mediterranean. After reaching Port Said, the passengers went ashore for shopping. The ship then continued through the Red Sea towards the Arabian Sea.
🩺 4. How did Dr Cronin discover that there was smallpox on the ship?
One morning Hasan brought two sick deck hands to Dr Cronin. They suffered from weakness, severe headache and body pain. Both had fever and thickly coated tongues. During the examination, Cronin noticed hard little nodules under their wrists. He immediately realised that they were suffering from smallpox.
⚠️ 5. Why was the outbreak of smallpox extremely dangerous?
The Ranaganji was in the middle of the Arabian Sea with about fifteen hundred passengers on board. There was no vaccine available, and smallpox was highly contagious. If the news spread among the passengers, it could also cause panic. Therefore, the disease had to be controlled quickly and secretly.
👨‍✈️ 6. How did Captain Hamble react when he heard about the smallpox outbreak?
Captain Hamble was a strict but fair-minded officer. He placed the responsibility for the health of the ship on Dr Cronin. He instructed him to prevent the disease from spreading and warned him not to allow the news to reach the passengers, as it might create panic. He also promised to give Cronin the help of Hasan.
⛺ 7. How was a shelter made for the infected patients?
As there was no sick bay or suitable cabin available, Hasan suggested building a shelter on the afterdeck. He quickly constructed a large canvas shelter in the stern, hidden from the passengers by derricks and donkey engines. Mattresses and sheets were brought there, and the patients were comfortably isolated.
❤️ 8. How did Hasan help Dr Cronin in treating the patients?
Hasan willingly volunteered to help Cronin, even though smallpox was highly contagious. He helped clean the patients, administer medicines, disinfect the shelter and prepare simple meals. As more men became infected, Hasan continued working tirelessly. His calmness and courage gave Cronin strength.
😷 9. How did the smallpox outbreak become more serious?
After the first cases were isolated, another crew member showed symptoms of smallpox. Soon three more deck hands became ill, followed by four more that afternoon. Within the next forty-eight hours, four more stokers joined them. Altogether, fourteen men became infected, and one patient became dangerously ill.
💪 10. How did Hasan show courage during the crisis?
Hasan showed no fear of the highly contagious disease. When Cronin warned him to be careful, Hasan replied, “I am not afraid, Doctor Sahib!” He stayed close to the patients and served them day and night. He considered helping them part of his duty and never thought about his own safety.
👤 11. What did Dr Cronin learn about Hasan’s personal life?
Hasan was originally from Punjab. He had spent nearly forty years at sea, including fifteen years on the Ranaganji. He had no close family or friends in India and had never married. He owned very little and lived a simple life. His greatest qualities were courage, self-control and faith.
💰 12. What was Hasan’s attitude towards money and reward?
Hasan had no desire for wealth or reward. When Cronin suggested that the company should give him extra pay for his extraordinary service, Hasan wondered what use money would be to him. He believed that he already had enough for his simple needs. His selflessness deeply impressed Cronin.
🤔 13. How did Hasan’s attitude to life influence Dr Cronin?
Hasan’s simple and selfless life made Cronin examine his own values. Cronin realised that he himself had a strong desire for success and wealth. Compared with Hasan’s courage, faith and lack of interest in material rewards, such worldly ambitions seemed unimportant. Cronin even felt ashamed of his own outlook.
🙏 14. How did Hasan show respect for the two patients who died?
Two of the infected men died. Hasan himself sewed their shrouds. Before their bodies were cast overboard at midnight, he read a short passage from the Ramayana. His actions show his deep compassion and respect for the dead, irrespective of religious differences.
🏥 15. What happened when the Ranaganji reached Colombo?
No new cases developed, and a week later the ship anchored off Colombo. The sick men were taken to hospital. Several had passed the critical stage, though three were still seriously ill. Hasan carried the helpless patients in his arms, and Cronin noticed tears on his cheeks as they stood together afterwards.
🌟 16. Why can Hasan be considered the real hero of the story?
Hasan is the real hero because he displays courage, compassion, humility and selfless devotion to duty. He risks his own life to serve the smallpox patients without expecting money or recognition. His actions prove that true greatness lies in character rather than physical appearance or social position.
🗣️ 17. Explain Cronin’s remark, “The animals were all outside.”
At Calcutta, Miss Jope-Smith once again mocked Hasan and asked where Cronin had kept him during the voyage. Cronin replied that Hasan had been “in a cage,” but “the animals were all outside.” He means that Hasan, whom she considered uncivilised, was actually noble and humane, while people who judged him merely by his appearance lacked true humanity.
💡 18. What is the central message of The Serang of Ranaganji?
The story teaches us not to judge people by their outward appearance. Hasan appears ordinary and unattractive, but his actions reveal extraordinary courage, kindness, faith and selflessness. The story shows that true greatness lies in humanity, service and noble character rather than wealth, status or physical beauty.]
