[🐢 THE SACRED TURTLES OF KADAVU – Easy Point Notes
A Fijian Legend
- Kadavu is an island in Fiji.
- Namuana is a beautiful village in Kadavu.
- The women of Namuana follow a strange old custom.
- They call turtles from the sea by singing a special song.
- The village girls gather near the rocky cliffs and sing.
- Giant turtles rise to the surface one by one.
- Catching turtles is not allowed in this area.
- If anyone from Nabukelevu is present, the turtles will not come up.
- There is an old legend (ഐതിഹ്യം) behind this custom.
- Long ago, Tinaioboga lived in Namuana.
- She was the wife of the chief of Namuana.
- Her daughter was Raudalice.
- The mother and daughter often went fishing together.
- One day, they went farther than usual for fishing.
- They walked onto the reefs (കടലിലെ പാറക്കെട്ടുകൾ).
- They were busy catching fish.
- They did not see a large war canoe coming towards them.
- The canoe carried fishermen from Nabukelevu.
- The fishermen caught Tinaioboga and Raudalice.
- They tied their hands and feet with vines (വള്ളികൾ).
- They threw the women into the canoe.
- The women begged them to let them go.
- But the cruel men did not listen to them.
- The gods of the sea felt sorry for the women.
- Suddenly, a great storm began.
- Huge waves tossed the canoe about.
- The canoe was almost filled with water.
- The fishermen became frightened.
- Then something strange happened.
- Tinaioboga and Raudalice changed into turtles.
- The fishermen threw the two turtles into the sea.
- Immediately, the storm stopped.
- The sea became calm again.
- The fishermen returned to Nabukelevu.
- The two turtles stayed in the waters of Namuana.
- People believe their descendants (പിൻതലമുറ) still live there.
- They rise from the water when the Namuana girls sing.
- The song calls Raudalice and Tinaioboga by name.
- It asks them to rise to the surface.
- We may doubt the old legend.
- But the song still brings giant turtles to the surface near Namuana.

The Sacred Turtles of Kadavu
10 .SACRED TURTLES
