Ivan Ivanich, Nicholai Ivanich എന്നിവർ സഹോദരന്മാരാണ്. കുട്ടിക്കാലം ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ ചെലവഴിച്ചതിനാൽ Nicholaiയ്ക്ക് ഗ്രാമജീവിതത്തോട് വലിയ ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് അയാൾ Exchequer Court-ൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തെങ്കിലും, ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ സ്വന്തമായി ഒരു സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി താമസിക്കണമെന്നായിരുന്നു വലിയ സ്വപ്നം. അവിടെ നെല്ലിക്കച്ചെടികൾ വളർത്തണമെന്ന് അയാൾ പ്രത്യേകം ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

ഈ സ്വപ്നം സഫലമാക്കാൻ Nicholai വളരെ പിശുക്കോടെ ജീവിക്കുകയും പണം സമ്പാദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. പണത്തിനുവേണ്ടി അയാൾ സമ്പന്നയായ ഒരു വിധവയെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. അവരുടെ മരണശേഷം Nicholai ഒരു സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങി. അവിടെ നെല്ലിക്കച്ചെടികൾ ഇല്ലാത്തതിനാൽ ഇരുപത് നെല്ലിക്കച്ചെടികൾ വാങ്ങി നട്ടു.

വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുശേഷം Ivan സഹോദരനെ കാണാൻ എത്തി. അപ്പോഴേക്കും Nicholai തന്റെ ഗ്രാമജീവിതത്തിൽ വളരെ സന്തുഷ്ടനായിരുന്നു. വൈകുന്നേരം അയാളുടെ തോട്ടത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായി ഉണ്ടായ നെല്ലിക്കകൾ മേശപ്പുറത്ത് എത്തി. അവ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ സന്തോഷംകൊണ്ട് Nicholaiയുടെ കണ്ണുകൾ നിറഞ്ഞു.

നെല്ലിക്കകൾ പഴുക്കാത്തതും പുളിയുള്ളതുമായിരുന്നു. എങ്കിലും തന്റെ വലിയ സ്വപ്നം സഫലമായതിനാൽ Nicholai അവ വളരെ രുചികരമാണെന്ന് കരുതി സന്തോഷത്തോടെ കഴിച്ചു.

സഹോദരന്റെ സന്തോഷം കണ്ട Ivan പിന്നീട് ചിന്താകുലനായി. സന്തോഷത്തോടെ ജീവിക്കുന്നവർ പലപ്പോഴും മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ കഷ്ടപ്പാടുകൾ കാണാതെ പോകുന്നു എന്ന് അയാൾ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു.

അതുകൊണ്ട് സ്വന്തം സന്തോഷത്തിൽ മാത്രം തൃപ്തരാകരുത് എന്ന് Ivan പറയുന്നു. യുവത്വവും ആരോഗ്യവും ശക്തിയും ഉള്ളപ്പോൾ മറ്റുള്ളവർക്ക് നന്മ ചെയ്യണം. ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ യഥാർത്ഥ അർത്ഥം സ്വന്തം ചെറിയ സന്തോഷത്തിലല്ല, മറിച്ച് നല്ല കാര്യങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യുന്നതിലാണ്.
